Ozone Layer Day: reducing CO2 emissions with the Smart Point

Every year on September 16th, the entire world celebrates the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, commemorating the signing of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. The main purpose of this protocol is to protect this essential protective layer by controlling the usage and production of nearly 100 toxic substances that harm it. Smart Point is committed to working hard to protect the environment by reducing ecommerce delivery related CO2 emissions, so this is an important date to us, extremely close to our hearts and mission.

About the Ozone Layer and the Montreal Protocol

The Ozone Layer is a shield of gas that sits a few miles above the Earth, protecting it from the harmful portion of the sunrays and protecting our lives and ecosystems. It also helps preserve a liveable temperature on Earth. Since the early 60s, new materials have been developed to make our life easier as a part of our capitalist society’s development. These materials and substances are now part of our day to day, mobility and industrial production for the last 40+ years.

The issue is that some of these man made chemicals, such as methyl bromide, methyl chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, halons, chlorofluorocarbons and hydrochlorofluorocarbons, are extremely harmful to the Ozone Layer. This being acknowledged, a collaboration mechanism was established during the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer, adopted and signed by 28 countries, on 22 March 1985. This later led, in September 1987 to the drafting of The Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.

The Montreal Protocol’s aim is henceforth to protect the integrity of the layer, taking measures to control the global production and consumption of these harmful substances (currently, the protocol controls nearly 100 substances), with the end goal of stopping its production in the long term. With the Montreal Protocol and the hard work of governmental and private entities alike, the Ozone Layer is expected to fully recover in the northern hemisphere by 2030, the southern hemisphere by 2050, and in the polar regions by 2060.

The Smart Point is a sustainable multi service delivery management solution which works with its own open source 3.0 technology. It offers bespoke convenience services to the consumer, whilst being able to receive, send and return packages from every single shop, big and small, around the globe.

One of the main goals of Smart Point as a company is to fight the effects of climate change by heavily reducing ecommerce related CO2 emissions to the atmosphere. When doing their online shopping, users can choose to receive their parcels to be delivered to a Smart Point. And where can we find Smart Points?

  • Spread across your city as part of a public network of Smart Points: increasingly more cities across Europe are acquiring public Smart Points, where the citizens can receive their online shopping. With that, they are allowing for cities to reduce massively their traffic, thus CO2 emissions that harm the Ozone Layer, and air pollution.
